Law as a tool for social justice

We are a community of lawyers working with grassroots communities challenging systemic injustice.

Our work

Sistren Legal Collective is a community of lawyers working in solidarity with grassroots communities challenging systemic injustice. We use our knowledge of the law as a tool to resource communities, rethink how the law is practiced, and redistribute legal knowledge by collaborating with leaders, activists, and organisations centring racial and social justice.

Why ‘Sistren’?

“Sistren” means sister or friend in Jamaican Patois. The name reflects the solidarity and support that defines our founders’ friendship and family ties. It reflects the bonds of community that guide our work and a collective approach to legal practice that is rooted in trust and mutual care.

How we support movements for change

We support individuals and groups that face systemic barriers to accessing legal support, prioritising organisations led by and for Black, Asian, migrant, refugee, indigenous, disabled and other minoritised communities in the UK.

Our work equips communities with the knowledge to develop their work, navigate legal systems, build collective power, and challenge structures that perpetuate harm. We believe in mutual co-learning and dismantling traditional lawyer-client hierarchies.
